Líderes Eternos

An Homage and a Call for Justice

a song by Fortune Machine, Free Soul, Natalia Pineda Gordillo & Upeksha

In Colombia, from January 2016 to June 2020, there have been 1166 murders of social leaders (and counting). People who risked their lives to defend human and environmental rights. And the killings continue to happen: according to Indepaz, in the first four months of 2021, an additional 52 murders of social leaders have been registered (Indepaz, 2021). And these are only the ones registered.

Líderes Eternos (eternal leaders) is a song born from the need to raise the voice of a country that cries out for peace, but is delivered war. It's a response to the acknowledgement that the current situation in Colombia is critical and something has to change. It is hard to understand how a country that a few years ago marched for peace and voted in favor of a peace agreement that brought forgiveness, reconciliation and truth, today has become a trench where anyone who protects human rights and the environment is in danger to be murdered.

With this song we seek to call for unity, to continue the struggles of those who were killed, and we raise our voice to protect human life. The song is also a tribute to those who are now in heaven, a way to show our gratitude for all they did and were still planing to do, making Colombia a more just, equitable and compassionate country.

The music video was made in collaboration with El Laboratorio Creativo de Reducción de Daños de IDIPRON. This laboratory is a space where young people who for different reasons and situations fell into drug consumption or/and inhabited the street, seek to reconcile with their past and recreate their future.

The collaboration was born from a workshop of the Laboratorio Creativo where we talk about identity, society, and history, among others. The killings of social leaders are a crucial part of the history of Colombia, and understanding the why and wherefore of the story of the social leaders, serves to understand the reality of the country. Violence in Colombia has affected the identity of each of its inhabitants.

The video was filmed in three locations that each tell a history in different ways: through the paintings in the national museum, the graffitis on the streets and the ruins of La L. The idea of the music video comes from the understanding that the main accomplices of violence in Colombia have been anonymity and silence. Violence and atrocities are only possible because they happen in the dark. The murders go unpunished because the murdered are invisible to society. This is song is meant to break that silence and the video illustrates that by turning those who live on the margins of society into the protagonists of this story. The voices of these young people represent the end of silence and anonymity, for the social leaders whose voices were shut, but whose words will sound for eternity, and for all those who have been and are still marginalised, ignored and isolated by society.
