Voices of San Andrés
About Voices of Sucre
In april 2024 Upeksha traveled to the remote island of San Andrés. Officially part of Colombia, but when looking at a map you see it lies closer to Nicaragua. However, the island's locals, the Raizales, consider themselves Caribbean, closer related to Jamaica, with their vibrant reggae culture, protestant believes and diverse heritage. We were invited by one the island's cultural leaders, singer Felix Mitchell Gordon, who told us about the island's history and culture. His son Jahman, performed a self-written song for us, and explained the different instruments they use in their music, most notably, the horse jawbone, a percussion instrument, literally made of a horse's jawbone. Finally, we were invited to a concert for and by locals, revealing the island's talent and connection to Jamaica.
