Canción Sin Miedo

A Battle Song Against the Femicide

a cover

Canción Sin Miedo is a resistance song by Mexican singer and composer Vivir Quintana. The song, released in 2020, has quickly become a feminist hymn against gender violence and femicide. Lead by Susana Fergusson, a group of a women from Bogotá, performed a cover of this song in honour of Susana's daughter who has committed suicide at the age of 19, after years of abuse by her own father. The lyrics, the music and the dance shed light on a subject that has been silenced for many years, taking sexual abuse out of the closet. "May the femicide fall hard" and may we never again accept any form of abuse or violence towards woman.

About the Project

The dance choreography was created by Valeria Escamilla, a professional dancer and teacher from Bogotá, Colombia. The dance performed by a group of girls who had never danced before, but learned this dance to expose a story that often too painful to express in words: "I am a bit ashamed to speak, that's why I dance" says Valeria. "Every step of the choreography was created for those women who were abused, violated and killed. For those who are no longer with us today".

This version of the song was produced by Casper te Riele and sung by Valeria Escamilla, Susana Fergusson, Maria Alejandra Caucali, Eimmy Castañeda, and Natalia Pineda Gordilla. The lyrics, written by Vivir Quintana, were slightly adapted by Susana Fergusson to apply the song to Colombia and the death of her daughter Alejandra. The release of this song marks tenth anniversary of her death. After mourning her daughter's death, Susana began working with abused women and girls to help them where she couldn't help her daughter. She says: "one of the reasons my daughter is no longer with us, is because she was afraid to talk about what was happening to here". This song marks Susana's resolution for 2023: "we have the get out of the closet of abuse. That is my task for 2023. We are going to create a strategy where women can get out. Denounce and heal".
